June 21 '09

Hope you all enjoyed this summer solstice, longest day of the year. Sorry have not posted an update sooner... We weren't able to work it out to be at the Winston Farmer's Market there on Tuesdays, so I do apologize for those of you who may have stopped by expecting to see us there. And if you haven't stopped by there, do so anyway. There's a bunch of nice folks there who have some really nice plants, produce and baked goods. Be sure to say hi to our friends Anthony and Sandee at Oh My Gato! Farms. (www.ohmygato.com) They have beautiful produce grown organically. They are all working hard to start something great there, and we must support our local farmers!

We have been enjoying the farmer's market in Drain, NUFARM. So many nice people and wow! all the beautiful produce coming out. I've been introduced to garlic scape for the first time in my life just last week by Suzie and Asinete from BIG LICK FARM. Brian sauteed it with some olive oil until tender, and just a sprinkle of salt, and oh, heaven! I found out that one can only get this for about two weeks in June when the stalks come out of the garlic. Rich and Kate from HAYHURST FARM had some today at NUFARM, and I couldn't resist. Not only that, but big beautiful lettuces, baby artichokes, fennel, peas.... Oregon living is fun.

June 10 '09 Update

Thanks for your advice regarding my finger. I am happy to say that I got through that ordeal just fine and it's healed up very nicely so I'm ready to roll sushi again! And just in time. Last Sunday we did a trial run at NUFARM, which stands for North Umpqua Farmers' and Artisans' Regional Market. A bit of a drive to Drain, but we had a nice time there meeting new people and even seeing one couple that used to visit us when we were operating our trailer in Roseburg, what a nice surprise! We plan to be there most every Sunday throughtout the season till the end of October. NUFARM is located in the little town of Drain, just follow the signs, it's not hard to find. Open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. As a side note, they are still accepting vendors. Just needs to be made or grown by the vendor. Contact Shirley Russell at 836-7032, she's the market manager. If you're passing through, stop by for a visit.

WINSTON FARMERS' MARKET has begun as of Tuesday June 9 and will run every Tuesday thru the season. It's a humble beginning for them, but I know it will turn out to be a great success! We are working on being there starting next Tuesday, please keep updated for that.

MUSIC ON THE HALF SHELL starts really soon, and by speaking with some of you, I can tell that people are really excited about this event. Things are underway for us to be there. Check out www.halfshell.org for more info on the event.
